The media center for the broadcasting company Südwestrundfunk is reshaping its sprawling company premises with precise urban planning. The premises include modern workspaces (approx. 330 editorial and office workplaces), a casino with a large kitchen, a conference / event area and equipment rooms. The construction site is located on a slope, with a height difference of 15 m between the uppermost and lowermost areas of the site. The design complements the campus-like structure through the addition of two buildings, the architectural compositions and proportions of which shape the open spaces with respect to the existing buildings. The space from which one can enter the foyer is representative of a characteristic type of entrance. A staircase with sitting steps connects the various topographical levels between the buildings. These steps serve as an area to take breaks as well as a tribune for open-air events. The foyer faces the exterior space on three sides, and the breaks and event areas, as well as the cafeteria and casino, can be reached from here. Bridges have been planned between the new and existing buildings to provide barrier-free access. A reinforced concrete skeleton structure supports the 13-storey office building; this structure is reinforced by a central circulation core and mounted on a shallow foundation. The façade consists of pre-fabricated, one-storey-high, regularly-repeating, fair-faced concrete elements.
