The design takes the city planning conditions and profile of the required usage into account, comprising solitary and spatially clearly-framed structures, which are both embedded within and penetrated by a carpet of green. The primary design approach taken is to divide the uses (facility kindergarten, social education center and hospital administration) into three differently-dimensioned, two-storey structures. The new buildings will be accessed on the same level via a sequence of tree-lined squares that extend into the clinic garden. A dense network of barrier-free paths connects the new facilities, which are located on the slope, with the northern clinic entrance as well as network of paths in the western clinic garden. Those walking along these paths can enjoy the views in the park, of the Gut Melaten and across the open countryside to the north.
The SPZ is accessed via ramps, which can be used for mild exercise and physical therapy. The facility kindergarten has a large, central space that can be opened up as needed and converted into a single, large activity room. The outdoor areas of the kindergarten are designed as an open, shared space in which so-called ‘game islands’ for the individual groups have been planned. The faux brick facade of the building, due to its homogeneity, gives the impression that the buildings have been embedded monolithically in the landscape. Materials that lend a warm appearance predominate in the interior spaces: for example, reinforced concrete walls are partly covered with wood, which has a positive effect on the acoustic properties.
