The new Center for Knowledge and Technology Transfer in Medicine, which will be built from 2012 to 2023 in Graz-Ries, is the first phase of construction on the MED CAMPUS Graz and will enhance the value of the entire district. The ZWT offers space and infrastructure for university start-ups and locations for small- and medium-sized companies in the fields of medicine and biomedicine. In addition, space is available for the Institute for Hygiene and the Institute of Human Genetics, as well as the Biobank, which are part of the Medical University of Graz. The building consists of two building halves which are connected by bridges. The wider half will be used for laboratories and the narrower half, which is supported by two-story columns on dancing columns, for offices. Spaces for publicly-accessible, commercial enterprises such as banks and cafés are located on the ground floor; rental units with office and laboratory spaces, as well as a conference area space that can be rented by all users, are found on the upper floors. The office tracts have been designed as single, group, or open-plan offices, the floor plans were designed such that a high degree of flexibility was ensured. The overriding goal, in terms of the building energy performance, was to achieve the optimal indoor climate conditions while minimizing the amount of energy needed. The floor plans were optimized regarding the utilization of daylight, and an electronically-controlled façade system will be installed to optimize the free cooling potential and the daylight-dependent lighting control.
